Craigardan

Craigardan has a short term summer residency program for two of more weeks for a multitude of media including cooking, pottery, farming and writing. The housing they offer is a rustic personal tiny cabin, designed as a very modern take on the Adirondack Lean-to, with a shared communal space and kitchen pavilion. They just built a new catenary arch wood kiln after moving to a new property. They hope to fire it every six weeks or so during the summer season. There is a weekly residency fee that includes a scholarship awarded to all accepted resident. Additional financial aid is available through work exchange and fellowships.

This is a new and fast growing program in a beautiful mountainous setting with lots of outdoor activity opportunities as well as be a part of a close knit and active community. Resident work space includes a private studio in one of their new barns of at the farmhouse. When I visited, it was in the winter when the way to the studio and housing is snowed in so I was not able to see those in person. I did however get to see many fluffy, happy looking sheep and Craigardan’s farm store. I got some delicious artisan made bread and butter! They sell and use all locally sourced foods and goods.

Craigardan also encourages cross and interdisciplinary exploration and creative dialogue with other residents in the program. If your looking for a summer residency with a woodfire kiln, farm animals, good food and great community involvement in a gorgeous, mountain and forested area, this is the residency to apply to!!
