Storm King does not have the facilities to support ceramic artists such as kilns and other equipment. This residency is best suited for research and planning projects.

Location: New Windsor, NY

Length: Short Term: 2, 4, or 6 weeks (June-October)

Housing: A private bedroom and shared bathroom in a historic four-bedroom residency house

Kilns: None

Expenses: Artists must bring their own materials, supplies, and tools

Funding/Stipend: None

Workspace: Private 9’ x 14’ studio spaces on Storm King’s grounds and within walking distance from the resident house. The studios do not have electricity so all corded tools must be used in a group work space attached to the house.

Responsibilities: None

Number of Residents: About 10 per year; no more then 3 at a time - artists can also apply for an individual format where they are the only resident present if they have children and wish to bring with them

Additional Opportunities:

  • The residency program supports working artists across multiple disciplines, in formats tailored to their unique needs

  • Residents may apply to a cohort format, hosting 3 artists at a time, or an individual format, for artists to be in residence alone with their families or as a collaborative group

  • The residency program is meant to facilitate experimentation, process, research, or production by providing space and time for residents to do as they wish. The program does not require that any artwork be made during the residency.

  • Storm King’s grounds comprise varied terrain including rolling meadows, hills, wooded areas, paved paths, gravel paths, and mown lawn

  • “Storm King Art Center nurtures a vibrant bond between art, nature, and people, creating a place where discovery is limitless” -Storm King’s Vision

  • There are pre-schedules trips into nearby Newburgh, so that residents without a means of transportation can purchase supplies. Tours of Storm King, studio visits, and other engagements with Shandaken and Storm King staff are offered on an opt-in basis.
