Mudflat Pottery

Mudflat has been a part of supporting the Boston ceramic community for over 50 years and have moved locations twice now. They are now located in an historic, renovated theater. When you walk to the back of the studio, you can see the beautiful molded arch and wall where the movies were displayed. I was pleasantly surprised at the vast amount of natural light and illuminated spaces at Mudflat throughout the studio. The people there were so friendly and eager to talk about how much they enjoy being a part of the Mudflat community.

While I was there, the owner was meeting with a muralist to commission a mural on the side of the building. The kilns looked like they were in good shape and the studios were clean and well organized. I met with Kate Kuligowski who gave me a tour of the facilities and introduced me to several members of the community. Mudflat and Ceramics Program at Harvard have an excellent relationship and give opportunities for people at either studio to teach at the other.

Mudflat puts effort into fostering relationships among their own community as well with potlucks, show openings and other community building events. For their 50th anniversary, they put together a theater night where they played a bunch of movies projected on the theater wall and had popcorn and movie snacks.

When talking with Kate, it was clear the residents presence there was valued and supported. They look for additional opportunities to offer residents to help build on their experiences and skills. Mudflat stays connected with their past residents as well.

Did I mention there’s a bird that lives in the offices? It’s become a beloved mascot of Mudflat. Mudflat’s website is also really nicely laid out and informative!
